How Long Should You Water Grass?

Watering is essential for growing healthy grass. Although grass does not need to be watered every single day to stay healthy, it needs at least 1" to 1.5" of water per week throughout the year.

If it is watered lightly, then its roots will not be deep enough to stay strong. The question here is, how long should you water grass?

It doesn't matter if the grass is on a flat or sloped surface (in fact, for landscaping a steep slope, you should head over to Carve Your Creation). Here are a few things you can do to check if you've watered enough:

1. Check the Depth of the Wet Soil

The deeper the water has seeped into the soil, the better. This is because wet, loose soil will allow the roots of the grass to grow and become stronger.

You can use a shovel or a screwdriver to see how deep you can easily dig. The desired depth is around 6", after which you can stop watering the grass.

2. Calculate the Time

If you are using a sprinkler to water your grass, then you should know when to stop it, so that extra amount of water is not sprayed.

To check the amount of water the sprinkler sprays, follow the steps below:

  • Place cans or cups all around your lawn area.
  • Start your sprinkler.
  • Let the sprinkler run till an average of 1" of water is filled in all of the cans or cups.
  • Check the time it took to fill 1" of the containers and accordingly calculate how long you should water the grass.

For example, it took about 30 minutes to collect 1" of water. That means you could run your sprinkler for about 15 minutes, 3 times a week to get enough water in your grass.

However, if you want to grow fresh grass and have sown new seeds, then you need to keep the soil moist (but not wet) at all times.

You should be able to dig up to two inches of the soil easily. Therefore, whenever you feel that the soil is going dry, you should water the grass for about half an hour using a sprinkler.
